Brunei
Brunei, officially known as Brunei Darussalam (Abode of Peace), is a small but wealthy sovereign state located on the north coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia. This oil-rich sultanate offers visitors a unique blend of modern Islamic architecture, pristine rainforests, and rich cultural heritage, all while maintaining its traditional Malay values and customs.
Brunei presents a fascinating contrast between traditional Islamic values and modern wealth, largely derived from its vast oil reserves. The country spans 5,765 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest countries in Asia, yet it possesses some of the region’s most impressive architecture and natural landscapes. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, showcases the nation’s wealth through its magnificent mosques, particularly the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque with its golden domes and marble minarets.
The country is divided into four districts: Brunei-Muara, Tutong, Belait, and Temburong, each offering unique experiences from urban exploration to pristine rainforest adventures. The Temburong district, separated from the main part of Brunei by Malaysia’s Limbang district, is often called the ‘Green Jewel of Brunei’ due to its pristine rainforest and serves as an eco-tourism haven.
Despite its small size, Brunei maintains vast areas of protected rainforest, with around 70% of its land covered in primary forest, making it one of the most pristine natural environments in Southeast Asia.
Brunei is located on the north coast of Borneo island in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by the Malaysian state of Sarawak and has a coastline along the South China Sea. The country is split into two parts, with the eastern part of Sarawak separating Temburong district from the western part of Brunei.
